Moore Elementary Mimio Core Skills _ December 6, 2013

Hi Moore Elementary Staff,

I enjoyed our sessions on Friday! I am so glad that you are enthusiastic about this new solution.  This post contains some notes about the Mimio software and hardware.

If you have any questions before my next visit, feel free to email me. I will also reserved the lab (2nd Floor at Central Office) on Mondays from 3:15p to 4:30p, beginning again in January 2014. These will be informal, drop-in sessions. We can go over core skills OR advanced skills. If you want help with files that you are working on, if you want to make your Mimio files more interactive for your students, OR if you need help beginning new Notebook files, these work sessions are for you. These sessions are to help you, no matter how experienced you feel with Mimio Studio. I look forward to seeing you in the new year, both at Moore and at the lab!

I hope you all have a great Christmas!

AZ Kelsey Academy Google Apps Training 12-3-13

CREATING DOCUMENTS IN DRIVE
>Click  (In top left corner)

>Choose Document

>Click on “Untitled Document” in the top left corner

>Name your document

>Click OK

>Begin creating your document.

>Every keystroke is saved in Drive automatically!

SHARING FILES IN GOOGLE DRIVE
>Check the box by the file or folder you want to share

2 options for sharing from “My Drive”
>Click the  icon at the top

OR

>Right click on the file and click share

OR
>Share from the open document by clicking the   button in the top right corner of the document.

>After you choose how to share, the “Share Settings” window will open and you can decide here what rights your collaborators will have.

>Choose to send a message when you share

>Choose to send yourself a copy

>Click “Share and Save”

If someone shares a file or folder with you, it will be in the “shared with me” link in Drive. These “shared with me” files are not automatically synced with your Drive on multiple computers. If the owner of the document deletes a file from their drive, then you will no longer have access to it either.

SHARING FILES WITH STUDENTS
If you "share" files with students, and it is a document that they need to add information to, you should teach them to "make a copy" of the file before making changes to it. It is helpful to decide on a "standard" naming convention. For example, if you share a file with the students and it is named "Social Studies Test Chapter 3", have the students follow the steps below to rename the file "Social Studies Test Chapter 3 _ AMayo". That way when they share the completed assignment back with you, you will know what the assignment is without opening it.

RESEARCH WITHIN GOOGLE DOCUMENTS
>With the document open, click “Tools”

>Click “Research”

>A new window will open

>Type in the word or phrase you want information about

>Next the the Google “G”, there is a pull down menu

>Choose how you want to search (everything, images, scholars, dictionary)

>You never have to leave your document to find what you want on Google!

STUDENT GMAIL
GSCS 3rd through 12th grade students now have email through GAFE. Below is the page they see upon their first attempt to log into Gmail.

You can share files with your students through Google Drive. They can also submit files to you through Google Drive.

CREATE GROUPS IN GMAIL
>While logged into Gmail, click the “Mail” button in the top left.

>Choose “Contacts”.

>In THAT list, scroll down and click “New Group”.

>Name your group. Now this group is listed in the left pane.

>Choose the group you just created.

>Click

>Begin typing names in

>After typing in all of your group’s names, click the ADD button and you are done! Now you have a “Group” so you don’t have to type in all of your student’s or colleague's names each time you want to share a file with your whole class.

>Next the the Google “G”, there is a pull down menu

>Choose how you want to search (everything, images, scholars, dictionary)

>You never have to leave your document to find what you want on Google!

This next section is for review only. We covered this at my last visit. I just wanted to have it in the same post because it is a great feature in Drive and one that I think teachers and students will use frequently.

SHARING FILES IN GOOGLE DRIVE
>Check the box by the file or folder you want to share

>2 options for sharing from “My Drive”
>Click the  icon at the top

OR

>Right click on the file and click share

>Choose to send a message when you share.

>Choose to send yourself a copy.

>Click “Share and Save”.

COMMENTS AND NOTIFICATIONS IN GOOGLE DOCS
If you have shared a document with someone, or if someone has shared it with you, comments can be made in the right hand margin. The OWNER of the document can receive notifications that someone has made a comment. This is a useful feature if you don't give someone editing rights to your document but you need their feedback.

COMMENTS
>With the document open, click the "comment" button

>Click the "comment" button inside the new window

>Type in your comment

>Click "comment"

NOTIFICATIONS
>With the document open, click the "comment" button

>Click the "notification" button

>Then choose if you want to be notified about ALL replies, replies just to your comments or none

>If you choose to get notifications, they will come to your email.

UPLOADING FILES TO DRIVE FROM YOUR COMPUTER
>Click the Gear icon in the top right

>Choose “Settings”

>Choose “Upload Settings”

>Choose “Confirm settings before each upload” (You will not have to re-set this option again.)

>Decide if you want to upload individual files or a folder (Folder option ONLY works with Chrome as your browser)

>Choose what you want to upload from your computer

>When “Upload Settings” window appears, choose the option you want

>Click the “Start Upload” button

You will see the status of the upload. Then you will see it appear in Drive. Open Drive on your desktop and you will see the file there too! If you delete a file from your Google Drive on your computer, you will see that it disappears from Drive online too!
***NOTE****
If you do not see the dialog box that lets you choose to upload as a Google Doc, just follow these steps:
>Click the gear icon (settings)
>Click upload settings
>Put a check beside "Confirm settings before each upload"
You will only have to do this once.
